The history of the relationship between James Gunn and comic book movies is worthy of film adaptation. Marvel bosses initially wanted to sever ties with the director because of his provocative tweets in 2009–2010. During this time, Gunn managed to become interested in DC – so much so that in the end it was he who headed the comic book film department and is now building their new cinematic universe. And to say goodbye to Marvel, he managed to film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. Part 3″. With this tape he shows everyone what the company will lose without him. At the beginning of the film, the Guardians of the Galaxy are doing what they do best: messing around. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) cannot come to terms with the loss of Gamora, which is why he regularly gets drunk. The life of the Guardians could continue like this, but an attack by Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) changes everything. Now the heroes must go on a dangerous journey to save the life of their friend Rocket – and at the same time learn the details of his dark past.
Guardians of the Galaxy has always stood out from other Marvel films. They weren’t looking to develop a cinematic universe, instead offering focused stories. Which, moreover, were always primarily about relationships between close people, and cosmic pathos and drama were only in the background. Don’t forget about the specific, “dirty” humor, because Gunn worked on films like “Movie 43” and “Porn for the Whole Family”).
It’s surprising that the third part of Guardians of the Galaxy was released in the fifth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, the last few years the MCU could only surprise in an unpleasant way. Over and over again we have been fed sterile films in which familiar characters do things that are not very clear. And all this for the sake of promoting the idea of a multiworld and the development of a common cinematic universe.
There is no unnecessary tinsel in the new Guardians of the Galaxy. This is the most focused story about extremely different personalities who still endlessly appreciate each other. And it is made so well that it is quite capable of bringing back the audience’s love for Marvel comic book movies.
Even though the premise of the film is somewhat simple, it only serves as an impetus for further adventures. But they are already as diverse as possible. Gunn abandons the concept of the classic “boring” space, instead offering to admire unusual locations and plunge into unusual situations. There was even a place for a subtle reference to Among Us.
However, delight is often caused not by local views, but by the characters’ reactions to events. The Guardians of the Galaxy continue to be the most textured and charming group of superheroes, in which the prefix “super” can only be used with a stretch.
Sometimes they are awkward, stupid and arrogant, and sometimes they are brave, noble and surprisingly deep. Each character in itself is very pleasant here, and together they literally bend the hall under themselves with the synergy of their endless power.
The new Guardians of the Galaxy is a very funny movie. And that’s in a good way.
There are a lot of stupid and some vulgar jokes here, but Gunn approaches them competently and selects good contexts, so there is no feeling of rejection. Even when the prerequisites for the decisive battle find one of the characters in the toilet, the integrity of the narrative still does not collapse, and the perception of the film does not deteriorate.
“Guardians of the Galaxy. Part 3” is also an extremely dramatic film. Gunn forces you to sincerely sympathize with the computer model of a talking raccoon. But the script is structured in such a way that it is impossible not to do this. Once again appealing to simple and understandable feelings, Gunn through a superhero story talks about the importance of intimacy, trust and support in difficult times.
The new comic book movie featured one of the best antagonists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an incredibly high-quality and appropriate licensed soundtrack, and bright and exciting action.
Some of the scenes towards the end were filmed in one shot – and filmed in such a way that they can be studied in film academies. After all, you still need to be able to build a tight action game in which not one of the Guardians gets lost against the background of the others. And Gunn did it.
There are no noticeable flaws in the new Guardians of the Galaxy. This is such a well-made movie that not a single element is superfluous.
Every plot twist, new discovery, even new absurd scene only leads to an impressive climax. And a touching finale, during which the hall exploded with applause several times in a row.
Gunn left no clues for a sequel. Yes, the Guardians of the Galaxy will return, because at Marvel it cannot be otherwise. But without Gunn and, probably, his former charm.
The director so successfully captured and portrayed this superhero team on screen that it is impossible to imagine anyone else working with them. If you have time, be sure to go to the cinema to see the end of the story of the familiar Guardians of the Galaxy. As they say, once again. From the heart.
