Well, maybe a couple of heroes. And this is quite simple to explain, since even before the start of the 2016 film, Warner Bros. I already wanted to make a sequel, and this desire was only reinforced by the box office. The same David Eyre was supposed to be the director, but in 2017 he left the project, and Gavin O’Connor hired for this role could not find a common language with the studio and soon also left the Suicide Squad. While the search for a new director continued, even Mel Gibson (!), was considered for Warner Bros. decided not to waste time and invited James Gunn to write the script in 2018.

At that time, Gunn was already a successful director and screenwriter, having written and directed Guardians of the Galaxy from Marvel Studios and Disney, and after their resounding success, the second part of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 / Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. According to the plans, Gunn was supposed to work on the next continuation of the picture, but his black humor on Twitter played an evil role with the director.

Back in 2008, he left some very inappropriate jokes on the social network, which surfaced almost 10 years later and caused seemingly irreparable damage to Gunn’s career. For Disney, whose business is one way or another based on entertainment for the family, the director’s statements, albeit very old ones, were a red line that the company could not afford to cross. Gunn’s apologies and explanations did not help, he was taken away from the script and the chair of the director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 / Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

But luckily, Warner Bros. saw Gunn’s dismissal as a good opportunity to get a talented screenwriter and director. Therefore, almost immediately, James received an offer to work on the script for the continuation of the Suicide Squad, which had even been announced as the second part. In the hands of Warner Bros. there were a lot of developments from different screenwriters, but Gunn decided to abandon the idea of the second part and shoot a separate film, leaving only a few familiar characters. As a result, Margot Robbie, who perfectly got used to the role of Harley Quinn, Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag) and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) moved to The Suicide Squad from Suicide Squad.

The premise of the plot remains the same: supervillains in a super-prison can serve their sentences forever, or they can perform a deadly mission for the US government, and then they will have their sentences mowed down. And so that they do not have a desire to escape, Viola Davis, in the form of Dr. Amanda Waller, who is ready for any sacrifice for the success of the mission, implants an explosive into the base of their skull. Decided to go AWOL? One push of a button and your head says goodbye to your body. In Suicide Squad, this is strict. And unlike the PG-13 neon film of 2016, the new R-rated film shows this head-off in a lot of detail. Gunn was given carte blanche and made the most of it with a great soundtrack. While writing the script, he sometimes first imagined what music would play in the background, and then he wrote the scenes.

I won’t go into further plot details, I don’t want to deprive you of the pleasure of discovering it yourself. I will only note that James Gunn is a really talented screenwriter (and also a musician, here is his band’s 1994 album). He managed to weave into a simple story of villains with explosives in the back of their heads, a completely logical narrative that leaves no doubt about the motivation of the main characters. But don’t jump to any conclusions about the movie right now, it’s far from being as simple as it might seem.

There are a lot of heroes in the picture, and they are all beautiful in their own way. And all because Gann surprisingly manages to reveal them. Already in the first 20 minutes you will know the superpower of each villain (especially since not all of them are evil), their motivation and character. I can’t describe all the characters, but I will note that those few actors from the 2016 picture in the new film are perfectly complemented by Idris Elba as Robert Dubois / Bloodsport, his irony and desperation are simply priceless, John Cena as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker, as if was born for the role, Nathan Fillion as Floyd “TDK” Belkin provides an amazing performance. And this is only a small part of the excellent cast of “Suicide Squad”. It is a pity that the mass audience will not hear the voice of Sylvester Stallone, who voiced Nanue / Shark King, because it is not often that an actor gives his best in voice acting.

In the end, without being an idealist, I will note that “Suicide Squad: Mission Through” will not appeal to everyone. But his devoid of all illusions bloody narrative will definitely appeal to many. If a psychopath with superpowers is allowed to try to solve the world’s problem, nothing else will come of it. This psychopath might be James Gunn, but you won’t know until you look.

Pros: simple but addictive plot; excellent cast; black humor by James Gunn; great soundtrack; rating R with all the consequences. Cons: Rated R with all that it implies Conclusion:

A bloody anti-superhero film with an addictive plot, a good cast and a soundtrack.
