I assume there’s a formal announcement out there somewhere, but this New York Times article says Bernie Williams is getting a plaque next year!
Crazy! And it’s about friggin’ time!
I’m speechless. I’ll let this sink in for a few days and try to rally my thoughts.
Until then, welcome to the new BernieWilliamsDay.org!!! Sign the petition today!
On April 16, 2009, Bernie Williams took part in the pregame ceremonies at the new Yankee Stadium when he played, “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” I really like his jazzy rendition on the classic tune – it’s jazzy and full of surprises – love those minor chords! Very cool arrangement!
This was posted on March 3rd, 2008 to Yankees.com:
Honoring Bernie: There is no official plan yet, but Hank Steinbrenner told The Associated Press that the Yankees will find a way to honor the career of former center fielder Bernie Williams.
A lifetime .297 hitter, Williams played 16 seasons with the Yankees, but separated from the organization awkwardly, declining a non-roster invitation to Spring Training last year. Williams is believed to be retired from baseball, though he has not officially done so.
So maybe the wheels are finally rolling! But we’re not there yet – lets get that jersey retired and get an annual day set up!
