Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron movie review

I was entertained by Avengers: Age of Ultron, but I also have to rip it to shreds.  There’s a lot to like, but honestly, it’s a bladder punishing two hours and twenty minutes that carries too much bloat.

Thor movie review

stars-three

I’m ready to explain my feelings on the Thor movie, and it’s all spoilers from here.  Also, I’m going to smash it into tiny pieces – yet, I liked this film.

spoiler alert

The following will spoil the movie for you.

I think the trailer actually did a better job of setting up the story; it would have been more interesting to have the movie continue on with the story on earth and then tell how Thor ended up on earth in flashback, but whatever.  Like Daredevil, maybe I’ll re-edit this movie someday.

I’m sure there is a way to review this movie without spoiling it for you, but I’m a big fan of comic books, so that’s just not going to work for me.

Much like the Incredible Hulk, Thor is a gigantic setup for The Avengers movie at it’s core.  Sure, it may look like this movie has interesting things to say, but I feel like I just sat through something that could have been summarized in five minutes during the first act of The Avengers – yet I was never bored.  I don’t have any explanation for that contradiction. Avengers TV show trailer

After watching the Avengers TV show trailer, I don’t think this is going to work.  I’m sure it’ll be better than Marvel Superhero Squad, but will not be able to reach the bar set by Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.  The fundamental problem might be that the show is being produced for Disney XD, which makes sense as Disney now owns Marvel.  Here are some issues I’m seeing:

The animation isn’t looking so good.  Did you see Captain America’s shield spinning?  It looks… weird.  I guess it’s rotating too slow for how fast its moving.  It’s not just that, though… there’s something a bit off.

The theme song is TERRIBLE.  Take a page from Justice League’s book and go with an instrumental.  This song rocks.

Just the little bit of dialogue I heard was HORRENDOUS.

However, they’re going with a strong, traditional line up:

Iron Man

Captain America

Ant Man/Giant Man

The Wasp

The Hulk

Hawkeye

The lineup pose at the end of the commercial seems to imply that Iron Man is leading the team, which isn’t especially traditional, but whatever.

I’m not willing to kill the show yet – I’ll give it a chance, but I’m setting my expectations low, and I advise everyone else does the same.
