Scream Movie Explained: What’s Up With the Ending?

The film “Scream” (Scream) became the fifth part of the famous slasher franchise. Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Neve Campbell appear in it – their characters once again risk their lives and join schoolchildren who are hunted by a maniac in a mask. The new picture endlessly refers to previous tapes, recalls the features of meta-horror, and through the lips of the characters calls itself a requel. There is so much self-irony in the script that in the end, following the plot becomes eerily boring.

The first Scream came out in 1996. It was directed by Wes Craven (who directed A Nightmare on Elm Street) and written by Kevin Williamson (who released I Know What You Did Last Summer a year later). They created an iconic meta-horror film where characters discuss horror films, mock the logic of slasher films and try to guess who will be the next victim of a masked psychopath.

Attention to the tape was attracted by an ironic idea, as well as the performers of the main roles, who were already popular. Drew Barrymore also starred in the film, who played an episodic, but rather striking role (her heroine spoke to a maniac, having entered into a dialogue with him on the phone, and soon received fatal stabs). However, the film was loved not only because of the actors. He was remembered for his successful suspense – scenes in which the killer is about to jump out on frightened heroes still keep the viewer in suspense.

The creators of Scream continued to work in the same genre, releasing three full-length sequels (the series of the same name was also released on MTV, but it is not tied to a film series). The characters Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) appeared in all the films. The trinity of daredevils managed to survive and uncover the identity of a new killer who carried out attacks according to the scheme of his predecessors.

It is noteworthy that the premiere of the fourth “Scream” was held in 2011, after which the franchise was put on a forced pause. The films were produced by Dimension Films (a division of The Weinstein Company), but after scandals with producer Harvey Weinstein, the rights to the franchise were acquired by Spyglass Media Group and Paramount Pictures.

With a brief backstory out of the way, now we can move on to the plot of Scream 2022. The events of the picture take place in the town of Woodsboro, where more than twenty years ago, Billy Loomis and his accomplice Stu Mayher killed people in cold blood, hiding their faces behind white masks (these names are worth remembering, Billy will be talked about more than once). Based on these events, a series of films was shot, on which a new generation of schoolchildren grew up – some of them are well versed in horror, participate in fan discussions and are well aware of the rules that will help them survive. However, awareness does not always save skeptical teenagers from mortal danger. A killer who loves horror films appears in the city, and he has already chosen his main target. A psychopath pursues a girl named Sam (actress Melissa Barrera, famous for the musical In the Heights) – she returns to the hated Woodsboro, having learned that an unknown person with a knife attacked her sister.

Sam quickly realizes that she cannot get rid of the pursuer, so she turns to people who have been in a similar situation more than once for help. First, Dewey Riley dives into the details of the case, followed by Gale Weathers and Sidney Prescott. However, the killer is clearly not from their circle of acquaintances, he is associated with a group of schoolchildren – these are six new characters who are united by friendship (which does not prevent them from suspecting each other).

A different production team worked on the fifth Scream (Wes Craven passed away in 2015, and Kevin Williamson did not participate in the writing of the script, becoming an executive producer). This probably influenced how the franchise has changed – the new film has become an endless meta-commentary that takes time for annoying discussions, pushing horror into the background.

Teenagers analyze the situation in which they find themselves. Geek character Mindy (played by Yellowjackets actress Jasmine Savoy Brown) explains that what’s happening to them is like continuing a horror franchise. According to her, fans are in awe of the original and don’t want to see a reboot. But you can’t do another sequel out of the blue, and the new story needs references to familiar characters. That’s why franchises have replicas – partial reboots that stick to the chronology of the events of previous films.

Okay, we figured out that Scream 5 is a requel. But what’s next? Apart from the discussions, there is nothing memorable in it. The script keeps repeating itself, new teens are uninteresting, and familiar characters show up as fanservice (which only works halfway because the actors don’t try very hard).

In the plot, the creators of the horror reproduce the scene with Drew Barrymore from the first film, but later the slasher becomes a disappointment – there is not a single scary moment in it, it only compares itself with the first tape and refers to the features of its franchise.

the fifth “Scream” turns into a boring meta-commentary discussing horror. Therefore, there is talk of a rickwell here, but no frightening twists and turns.
