Save the Soda: Soda Crisis Review

Chinese studios are increasingly entering the international market, offering projects in various genres and directions. In addition to the bright, but boring Bright Memory: Infinite, this year we managed to get acquainted with Sword and Fairy 7, and now it’s the turn of Soda Crisis. The popular shoot and run game combines some interesting ideas and mechanics from Super Meat Boy and Flappy Bird.

As the name suggests, Soda Crisis is about big soda problems. Alien ships are ravaging the San Cola factories in an alternate version of Earth, and only a test subject from a secret lab and part-time big lover of magic bubbles can stop these atrocities.

In Soda Crisis, you control a super soldier who has a limited energy kit that powers all of the suit’s abilities. Skillful distribution of resources will allow you to create a fighter that is most suitable for your tasks and style of play. At first, the hero will use an ordinary pistol, but gradually he will receive a machine gun, a sniper rifle, a shotgun and a laser gun. On the selected weapon, you can hang fire boosters, rate of fire modules, or ricochet-type effects. Although the game assumes a certain balance, most of the modules are designed to make a superweapon out of a machine gun.

By choosing your base gear, you can upgrade passive skills such as shields, health boosts, or drop health packs from defeated enemies. The last component is grenades, which can also be upgraded or replaced with metal knives. The hero also has a hook – with its help, they can cling to surfaces and break through the defenses of enemies.

At the levels, the protagonist can accelerate, move quickly, dodging lasers and bullets, and also run along vertical surfaces. Using weapons and skills, you must go through small stages, where sometimes it will be necessary to destroy all enemies in order to open the door. Sometimes hidden bonuses or a merchant with new modifications are hidden in locations.

Separately, there are stages using special transport, where the hero can climb. From forklifts jumping over laser pits, to ball-shaped cars that speed you up in Sonic style, and bird-shaped planes, referring to the already mentioned Flappy Bird.

Levels range from fast response platforms to intense shooting meat grinders inspired by classic Contra and Metal Slug. All this is accompanied by very beautiful graphics and visual effects.

The visuals in Soda Crisis are really good and surpass FIST picture quality, showcasing all the fancy technologies including high detail, light refraction and dynamic reflections. Fortunately, the game is translated into English, so you can understand all the vicissitudes of the local primitive plot.

Soda Crisis is a light and really fun action game with elements of platforming and popular arcade games of the past. The repetitive stages can cause bouts of frustration, but they are too short for you to get bored. All in all, an almost perfect project for short gaming sessions after a long day at work.
