A Wild Mix of Fast Action & Visual Novel: Neon White Review

A new project from Donut County creator Ben Esposito offers a wild mix of visual novel and fast-paced action with puzzle elements. Neon White tells the story of a gang of assassins who get a chance to be cleansed in a series of divine competitions.

The one who can clear the stages from demons the fastest will receive forgiveness and a place in paradise. You, in the role of White Neon, suffering from memory lapses, meet a team of Neons from the earthly past and plunge into a world of conspiracies and incredible adventures. Yellow Neon was once your best friend, you had a special relationship with the lustful Red, Violet resembles a spoiled child, and Green breathes real power and danger.

The game is divided into two parts. In the main one, you run through short levels for a while, and the second is a visual novel, where the hero can communicate with angels or other Neons, exchange the points earned for valuable prizes, or give gifts found at the levels to his friends to increase social connection. The dialogues themselves are distinguished by humor and sharp picks, but clearly do not reach the level of the Persona series, which served as inspiration for the authors of the project. In the same social hub, the developers offer to look into the level archive and replay the previous stages for the best rating.

The stage rating affects your place in the Neon hierarchy and the availability of new levels. In addition, upon reaching golden time, you will receive hints from the system on how to pass the studied stage already to platinum and get even more bonuses.

But back to the competition itself. Your main task in the world of Neon White is to complete the level in the shortest possible time and destroy all the demons. In this you should be helped not only by good reflexes and knowledge of the stage, but also by special cards. By picking up such a card, you will receive a powerful weapon that is enough for several shots to exterminate demons and a special skill.

For example, a pistol card will help you shoot demons, and it also gives the hero a second jump in the air. The sniper rifle card allows you to quickly move forward, destroying everything in its path, the machine gun fires a grenade that throws you up and has a large radius of destruction, and the machine gun allows you to quickly strike from above. By combining maps and environmental elements like gunpowder kegs, demonic orbs and wooden fences, you can quickly reach the finish line. It is in the correct and timely use of maps and environments that the key to success lies.

At first, the game feels crooked and unbalanced, but the idea is that as you understand the basic mechanics, you will get more and more involved in the gameplay and will soon start spending tens of minutes polishing a ten-second stage.

Thanks to a successful combination of interesting stages, maps and opponents, the magic of Neon White is triggered, which can take you away from everyday reality for several hours. At the same time, the authors do not have stunning graphics or some modern effects in their bosoms. Neon White looks like a game from the last century with cartoon animation and simple solutions.

The musical accompaniment here is exclusively for an amateur, but it suits the dynamic gameplay well, without being too catchy tracks.

Neon White is one of those rare games that can take you captive and not let go until the first rays of the morning sun. Of course, the underdeveloped social aspect and the need to beat stages for gold to get new levels may turn off some players, but everyone else will remain incredibly satisfied.
