How did the song become the unofficial anthem of Ukraine?
As we mentioned above, “Another love” has been popular for all its 10 years, but recently the explosive popularity of the song has been brought by the TikTok music platform .. Where without it? Absolutely any song can go viral thanks to TikTok. Users began uploading videos to this song from the beginning of the war in Ukraine, editing fragments of their peaceful life before the war under it. And thus, the song “Another love” became the unofficial anthem of Ukraine in social networks.
Tom Odell himself noted on TikTok that he was very flattered that so many Ukrainians use the song for their videos: “Long live Ukraine! I must come and we must sing it together.” In addition, under the video clip on YouTube, the musician posted a link to a site where you can make donations to raise funds for the Ukrainian crisis. In fact, Tom dedicated his creation to Ukraine and opposed the bloody war.

The title is a few years old, I think we all know that. This pop music masterpiece was released in October 2012 as a pre-release EP, which Tom Odell called“Songs from Another Love” . But before the singer made a name for himself in the music world, like everyone, he started small. Piano lessons at the age of seven, up to the first own songs. A musical education at the Institute of Modern Music at 18 , but still an active songwriter.
As it is at 18, the first band wasn’t far off either. Discovered by Lily Allen , her music career really took off. A perfect match between two very strong songwriters? Yes! Because shortly thereafter, Tom Odell signed a contract with Lily Allen’s own label ” In the Name of” and released his first EP “From Another Love” . The following year the first album “Long Way Down” was released , on which “Another Love” was represented again. This extremely emotional song is about many failed relationships and emotional powerlessness “all my tears had been used up”, says the refrain. But despite the melancholic mood, “Another Love” stayed at number 11 in the German charts for a whopping 66 weeks – and rightly so, because this song covers a lot of musical facets.
I first heard the song on the radio when I was 13. Something about it fascinated me, but I couldn’t explain exactly what was so fascinating. So time passed and the piece was gradually replaced by other pieces, almost forgotten. Sure, the song was played on the radio from time to time, but I didn’t notice it. It wasn’t until recently that I noticed how great the way the songwriting was actually implemented. “Another Love” conveys such strong emotions that this song brings tears to my eyes time and time again.
The simple use of piano and voice may seem unspectacular to many. But the beautiful thing about this song is actually exactly this simple structure, which is broken through in the course. While at the beginning we still hear the shy voice of Tom Odell , who is desperately trying to prove her love, after the first chorus we are almost overwhelmed with powerful choir voices that give you the feeling of an inner struggle with yourself – goosebumps.
It should also be briefly emphasized here how inventive this part of the choir actually is. I have an absolute soft spot for polyphonic singing, in other words, I’m totally picked up here. Actually what I’m saying is this part is the perfect example of the details I was talking about. When you listen more closely, you realize how many voices there are, which harmonies are covered and how the volume is distributed. A little vocal adventure trip. It’s insanely fun to focus on a different voice each time. The chorus also appears again and again in a weakened form – all the details that I would not otherwise have noticed.
But not only the singing changes. There is also a clear difference in the placement of the instruments. The piano is suddenly supported by a palm mute style guitar and a dull drum kit. The singing gets more and more intense. And not only the vocals and the instruments are more present – the text also gets more and more pointed. More emotion, more from the inside of the artist “I wanna cry, I wanna learn to love”. A rousing atmosphere is created in which the text and music take you by the hand and immerse you in a world of melancholy. You begin to understand more and more. It’s that feeling of almost pleasant depression, similar to Billie Eilish ‘s today. Difficult themes are wrapped up in a beautiful aesthetic and everyone can somehow better empathize with the situation. It’s beautiful, but terrible at the same time.
We all know the feeling of being hurt. You either deal with it openly or you don’t. Especially when it comes to a broken relationship, most of us have to swallow first.
But that’s exactly why I find the whole story behind the lyrics so incredibly understandable. Tom Odell sings about feeling burnt out because he feels like he’s done everything wrong. He sings about how he doesn’t know where all the cold is coming from. He fantasizes about so-called “what if situations” and screams them out into the world in the form of music. Dealing so openly with your feelings is strong, courageous and above all impressive. The artist throws ever stronger images at you, in which he reveals the struggle with himself. On the one hand he seems strong and self-determined “and if someone hurts you, I wanna fight” and on the other hand the house of cards that has been built collapses again “but my hands have been broken, one too many times” . Insecurity accompanies each of us.
Tom Odell’s creation “Another Love” is a melancholic journey into the interior of the singer, which touches me as a listener through and through. It’s a song that always stays up-to-date thematically and in which you can certainly discover many new aspects and details even after listening to it several times. It is my warmest recommendation to anyone who loves songs with depth – because believe me, this work definitely has that!
