“Breaking into the NBA” is a classic sports drama, where everything is good – from the staging of every scene, to the acting and the atmosphere. At the same time, director Jeremiah Sagar and screenwriters Taylor Matherne and Will Fetters did not manage to avoid almost every possible cliché of the genre. But it does not spoil the picture and here is why.

The new film tells about two heroes at once: the former player and current coach Stanley Sugarman and the young, unknown, but talented basketball player Beau Cruz. No one believes in heroes, so before us is a fascinating story of two men who are trying to make their dreams come true. Each of them has made mistakes in the past, but they overcome difficulties and fight to the end.

Break into the NBA

“Breaking into the NBA” does not idealize basketball as a sport and the NBA itself in particular. This is a cruel business, where every unnecessary movement or word can ruin the career of a talented player that never started. These are unscrupulous basketball players who prey on newcomers to eliminate competitors. These are proud club owners and upstart coaches. They put labels on players that stick with them for the rest of their lives.

At the same time, the picture shows another side of basketball. These are millions of fans and the same number of children and teenagers who are passionate about this sport and dream of getting to the NBA. This is a full-fledged big family, where everyone knows each other and is ready to help in any difficult situation.

“Breaking into the NBA” is a real basketball movie, and it’s really steeped in it from start to finish. Many roles in the film were not played by professional actors, but by current or former basketball stars, as well as other media persons associated with this sport. Additionally, Beau Cruz’s character Juan Hernangomez is a professional Spanish basketball player who plays for the Utah Jazz in the NBA. And Stanley Sugarman’s best friend is played by Kenny Smith, a famous American basketball player.

The success of the film was ensured by the incredible chemistry between the main characters. Stanley and Bo Cruz, as father and son, as classic mentor and disciple. A basketball scout tries to help a young player to give himself a chance for happiness through him. They complement each other and are sincere friends.

Sandler’s character likes to talk and does it with pleasure. This peculiarity of his perfectly correlates with the taciturn character of Beau, performed by Hernangomez, and makes this couple harmonious on the screen. Sandler once again showed that he is incredibly natural in dramatic roles and they are no worse for him than comedic ones. And the non-professional actor Hernangomez appeared on the screen as a cute hero and a realistic character, which is a pleasure to watch. He skillfully hides his lack of acting skills behind his lack of words and natural charm.

Break into the NBA

You don’t have to be an athlete and love basketball to get excited about the movie and keep watching until the end. After all, this is almost two hours of timing. Among the shortcomings, it is worth highlighting the undisclosed life story of the character Beau Cruz, as well as the relationships within his family. At the same time, too much emphasis is placed on Stanley, his relationship with his daughter and wife (Queen Latifah).
