Turkmenistan Gas Crater of the Karakum Desert (Gate to Hell)

Sometimes I’ll hear something on WNYC radio that’s so awesome I have to stop what I’m doing and check it out.  The Turkmenistan Gas Crater of the Karakum Desert (also known as the Gate to Hell) is one of those things.

Apparently, the Russians were drilling and the ground just kind of collapsed and burst into flames and they were like, “Fuck… I mean Блядь because I’m Russian, but seriously, fuck!  Turkmenistan is on fire!  Uhm… huh…”

Yep, that’s what they did.  They bailed.  So, if you want to see a big hole on the ground that’s perpetually on fire (and probably devastating air quality), this is the place to go.
