Yard of ale? Boot of beer?

It’s not enough to drink beer – you have to make a game of it. It’s required, apparently.  I’ve seen people play beer pong and quarters, but there’s another level to this drinking games phenomenon.

I first became aware of the beer boot glass when I saw the movie Beerfest. Then, I saw the half yard and one yard glass at the store. What gives?
It turns out, they’re variations on the same drinking game that dates back to the 17th century. Both glasses create an air bubble and the challenge is (as seen in the video above) to triumph over said air bubble and not get beer all over your face.
I guess it’s been this way for hundreds of years, but dude, can’t we just drink it?  I guess not, though I think the promise of inebriation is enough.
