Godzilla Vs. Megalon (movie review)
Check out the above recap of Godzilla Vs. Megalon from Cinemassacre!
This may be the only Godzilla movie I’ve seen all the way through, and even though it’s ridiculous, I love it.
Even a Godzilla novice like me knows that in nearly every Godzilla movie, he fights some other monster, crushes a bunch of miniatures (that’s models of buildings for you non film nerds) and just raises hell. What makes this movie so memorable is Jet Jaguar. I know he’s silly looking, but I actually like the design; the mixture of colors, smooth and hard lines and that expression all work for me. I like that his powers include flight, martial arts and growing in size – what an interesting set! I also think the idea of a robot that can act autonomously based on simple instructions but also exercises its own basic understanding of right and wrong is a cool idea. Jet Jaguar might not be bad ass enough to take on two monsters at once, but he’s still awesome in my book.
Ultimately, when all is said and done, this ends up being a tag team wrestling match between four guys in goofy costumes, but it works for me. And I love the Godzilla costume design; he’s sooo cute! I want to get him a biscuit or something after he beats the monsters. “Good boy, Godzilla!”
It’s silly and apparently stuffed with stock footage, but if you haven’t seen those other movies, that doesn’t really matter. Also, at 83 minutes long, it’s extremely efficient. It’s not a perfect movie, but it’s fun; I’m giving Godzilla Vs. Megalon a 7 out of 10.
