5 notables on Son of Batman (movie review)

For the most part, I’m a big fan of the DC Comics Animated Universe. It’s almost all gold, but this time, they kinda blew it. I wouldn’t say Son of Batman is boring, but since none of the characters are especially interesting, it just kinda plods along to its inevitable conclusion.

Here are the few things that caught my attention:

1. Jason O’Mara as the voice of Batman.
I didn’t see that coming – it’s the guy from such movies as One for the Money and… One for the Money. He’s OK, but not memorable.

2. Thomas Gibson as the voice of Deathstroke.

Seriously, it’s the guy from Criminal Minds and Greg from Dharma & Greg. That one I really didn’t see coming. I never thought I’d have to reference Dharma & Greg in a post about Batman or in relation to Batman in any way.

3. Vegan!
Deathstroke points out that that the family the audience doesn’t care about at all is eating a vegan meal. It’s pointless, but I get excited anytime anyone says ‘vegan’ in any media.

4. Nightwing – sidelined again.
Just like in Batman: Under the Red Hood (which is a really good movie, by the way), Nightwing gets hurt and can’t participate in the third act finale. That’s getting a little old, DC Comics Animated Universe. Come up with something new!

5. The only thing Damian Wayne has to learn is to not kill people.
The thing that probably sinks this movie is that there’s nothing interesting about Damain Wayne becoming Robin. Since he’s already been trained, the only thing that Batman can teach him is not to kill everyone, and he figures that out easily enough.

6. Blood!
The amount of blood and violence in this movie is kinda shocking. It didn’t bother me, but I sure was surprised. This one is not for the real little kids.

Son of Batman is just OK; it’s for the hardcore fans only, and I think even they’ll be a bit disappointed. I’m giving it a 6.5 out of 10.
