X-Men 2: X-men United (movie review)

Before X-Men: The Last Stand ruined everyone’s life, there was X2, or X-Men United, or whatever you want to call it – simply call it a good movie. It’s easily the best X-Men movie to date, and it may be the best X-Men movie there ever will be.

X2 has it all: story, action, pacing, suspense, and a general sense of fun, despite the drama and intensity of the ending. Like The Empire Strikes Back and The Wrath of Khan before it, it’s a great second movie in a series. There’s not a lot to say about it; the movie is great and it really speaks for itself. If you haven’t seen it yet, stop reading now and go watch it – then come back so we can discuss!

Despite the overwhelming importance of Jean’s arc and the series’ Mutant vs Humans" war, it’s really Wolverine’s story that drives the narrative and keeps you hooked. Hugh Jackman is so good in this… you’ve got to love that moment in the car. Someone says, "Who was that man? What did he want" and Wolverine replies, "Striker. His name is Striker." and the kids say, "Who’s that?" and Wolverine answers, "I can’t remember." It’s so perfectly executed! It’s just one example in a movie filled with perfect moments.

For all the good things this movie has going for it, it’s impossible to talk about this movie without mentioning the parallels to the ending of X2 and that of Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan. X2 deployed the whole "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few… or the one" thing perfectly. Both movies even end with Jean and Spock respectively spouting their series’ tag lines and end with similar imagery… I’m taking great pains to avoid spoilers, but who am I kidding? Even X2 is over ten years old, so you know what I’m talking about!

By now, I think it’s clear that I’m a big X2 fan. I’ll spare you any more Brian Singer worship and just give this movie a 9 out of 10.
