2 Broke Girls [TV review]
I’ve got an idea for a show! You’re going to love it! LOVE IT! Are you sitting down? You should sit down for this. You’re already sitting down? My mistake, I wasn’t paying attention because I’m so enthralled with this idea. You’re going to love it! Did you like The Odd Couple?
Did you like Sex and the City?
Do you like those reality shows where they make cupcakes?
Then have I got the show for you! It’s called 2 Broke Girls and it combines the critical elements of all three of those shows! It’s genius! All the fun of a sitcom with the edge of sexy talk… add a dash of hominess via baking! This show has everything! Oh, and did I mention that I got Kat Dennings to star?!?
[you have no idea who I’m talking about]
You know, Kat Dennings! Kat Dennings! Meow! She played the daughter in The Forty Year Old Virgin! She was the female lead in Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist!
[no one saw that second movie – you have no idea who I’m talking about]
She was the sassy friend in Thor… she’s sporting a C-cup at least–
Exactly, sex sells! So the first thing we should do is put her in an ill fitting costume that makes Kat look like a misshapen lump with a hair style and makeup that makes her eyes, nose and mouth look freakishly out of proportion–
[you would love to know why we’d want to do such a thing]
Because she’s sassy! Meanwhile, the same costume will work perfectly to hide the fact that costar Beth Behrs has any breasts at all!
Look, we’re already reaching comedy fans because of the genre, the socialites and gays with the sexy talk, moms with the baking, but now we’ll get younger views and the freaks! You know, those kids who work at Hot Topic! Then we’ll fill the scripts with lazy writing, stereotypes and things that are just downright unfunny–
[you are now walking out of the room]
Wait! The jokes will largely be unfunny and sexual in nature! And racist! Come back! I’m going to cast a tiny Asian man as their boss and have him written as a stereotype!
[I am yelling down the hallway as you frantically push the button for the elevator]
CBS HAS PICKED UP TWO BROKE GIRLS FOR A SECOND SEASON.
And now, a sample of reviews:
“If raunchy and stereotypes aren’t your thing, you will run away from it.”
“I was never a fan of it, and now find it unwatchable.”
Alan Pergament, The Buffalo News
“cheap, predictable and unfunny jokes”
Tim Goodman, The Hollywood Reporter
“so racist it is less offensive than baffling”
Emily Nussbaum, The New Yorker
“racial humor [that] consists entirely of having a stereotype show up, portraying it in the most obnoxious way possible, then having everybody make fun of it.”
Todd VanDerWerff, The A.V. Club
“perhaps its biggest sin, the main reason I’m abandoning the show, is those two rape jokes in the first three episodes.”
“This is pretty bloody awful. In fact this is one of the worst shows I’ve ever seen.”
Doug Anderson, The Sydney Morning Herald (Yeah, even Australia hates this show)
