We are Young by Fun [what in the hell is this song about, anyway?]

I’ve been hearing “We are Young” by Fun on the radio a lot lately, and I really like how it sounds (although it’s intense redundancy can only be tolerated for so long), but I have no idea what the hell it’s about – or exactly what is being said.  To remedy that, I looked up the lyrics.Give me a second chance
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom
Getting higher than the Empire State
My lover she’s waiting for me
Just across the bar
My seats been taken by some sunglasses
Asking ’bout a scar
And I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you’re trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies
You know I’m trying hard to take it back
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I’ll carry you home

I’m with you so far…  It sounds like the guy singing is the abuser in an abusive relationship and the woman drinks a lot so she can ignore the fact that her man is abusive.

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun

You lost me, chief.

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun

Doesn’t make any more sense the second time.  What the hell does this have to do with the first verse?

Now I know that I’m not
All that you got
I guess that I
I just thought maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let’s raise a cup
Cause I found someone to carry me home

Does “find new ways to fall apart” mean he wants to find ways to torture his woman besides beating her?

Tonight
We are young
So let’s the set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun

Ugh, again with the sun.

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun

Still don’t know what this has to do with anything.

Carry me home tonight
Just carry me home tonight
Carry me home tonight
Just carry me home tonight

Wait, carry me home tonight?  As in the vocalist?  I thought you were going to carry her home?  Because she drinks a lot so she can put up with your abusive ass?  No?

The world is on my side
I have no reason to run
So will someone come and carry me home tonight
The angels never arrived
But I can hear the choir
So will someone come and carry me home

You mean the world is pro abusing women?  That’s not especially true – at least not in this country, nor anywhere in the western world.  And what are you talking about now?  Angels and choirs?  No idea what this refers to.

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun

You repeat this chorus one more time and I’m going to set you on fire!

Tonight
We are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the sun

God damn you to HELL!

So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I’ll carry you home tonight

Oh so now we’re back to you carrying shit?

This song is a cluster fuck.  It’s like they took two songs that didn’t have anything to do with each other and kept the parts they liked – like the had one song with a shitty verse and this ‘we are young’ chorus, and then they took this verse about abusive relationships and just jammed them together.  Because seriously, what the hell does this ‘we are young’ anthem having to do with anything that comes up in the first verse?  And the rest of the song is just a mess – here’s another chorus because that sounds good, here’s some other words that don’t make any sense…

Blah.  This song would be better if it was in Russian or something – at least that way, I wouldn’t know what the hell he’s talking about.
