Turn It On Again by Genesis [what in the hell is that song about, anyway?]

Today, I listened to Genesis’ hits album, starting with “turn it on again.”  What in the hell is that song about, anyway?  Let’s take a look at the lyrics and try to figure it out.

All I need is a tv show, that and the radio
Down on my luck again, down on my luck again
I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
Its driving me mad just another way of passing the day
I, I get so lonely when she’s not there
I, i, i…

mmhhmm.  OK.  So far, it just seems like Phil Collins is yelling about shit.  I guess…  all he does is watch TV and listen to the radio because… he’s unemployed?  So the people on the radio/tv are the only people in his life now because he has no reason to leave his house.  The TV and radio are driving him mad but he has nothing else to do…  but he misses a woman…  is the woman someone on TV?  Or TV itself?  Like after networks would sign off for the day?

You’re just another face that I know from the tv show
I have known you for so very long I feel you like a friend
Cant you do anything for me, can I touch you for a while
Can I meet you another day and we will fly away

So he wants to hang out with the chick from TV?  And fly away?  Presumably AFTER he’s finished touching her?

I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
I can show you I can show you some of the people in my life
Its driving me mad it’s just another way of passing the day
I, I get so lonely when she’s not there
I, i, i…

So now we’re back to this again…  And then it ends with this:

Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again
Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again i can see another face
Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again I can see another face
Turn it on, turn it on, turn it on again

The TV?  The radio?  Turn one of those on again?  Who turned it off?  Phil?  Certainly not me… and  who’s face?

WHO’S FACE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

either way, this song rocks.
