Movies to Musicals [VIDEO]

Ever wonder what would happen if big budget action movies became musicals?  Check out the video to see the result!

While plays and books often translate well to film, not everything works as a musical.  This video includes a few examples as well as my own interpretations of what a musical version of The Matrix, Empire Strikes Back and Snakes on a Plane would be like.

Although “Movies to Musicals” was most recently inspired by both the Ghost musical trailer and the fantastic Commando:  The Musical as well as the never ending adaptations of unusual source material turning into musicals (such as Spider-Man:  Turn Off the Dark), this idea has been brewing for a long time in some form or another.

I had just finished reading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when the musical opened on Broadway in 1997 and I was totally perplexed.  The first thing that sprang to mind was the scene in the novel in which a smiling older gentleman asks Mr. Hyde for directions and Mr. Hyde responds by beating the man to death with his cane.  “What could they possibly be singing about?” I would wonder aloud whenever the ad aired on TV.  (I used to sing a song I called, “First I’m Nice, Then I’m Angry!” that I imagined was in the show.  I decided to leave that out of the video – if you watched it, you’ve been punished enough.)

After that, I just assumed that anything was fair game for musical adaptation, and nearly anything and everything has come to pass since, except Harry Potter, which would have featured music by Michael Jackson, but the concept was refused by J. K. Rowling.  We also never got the Captain America musical we were promised back in 1985, but apparently, there are recordings of the score out there, somewhere.  Instead, we got Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown and Wonderland.  I’ll just guess that all of these shows were  equally crappy along with the other millions of weird shows that have been cropping up in the last twenty or so years, but both of those have closed, so there’s no way to know.  Oh, and the Green Day thing…  I think I’ve complained about that enough already.
