My 14 Favorite Episodes of The Simpsons, season 2

the-simpsons_logoThis was a tough list to make as the second season of The Simpsons doesn’t really have any bad episodes. I decided that the best thing to do was just hunker down and pick my favorites; the ones that have really stuck with me over time. So, in no particular order, here are my favorites episodes from The Simpsons, season two style.

Bart Gets an F
“Look, John Hancock is writing his name in the snow!”
This episode connected with me at the time as I’ve always struggled with math, and it’s an episode I’d always think back to when studying in high school and college. “Com on, man! Concentrate!” And sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we still fail. I hear ya, brother.

Simpson and Delilah
I could never remember the lady Samson fell in love with; this episode is a good reminder! But beyond the trivia, it’s a fun story that I connect with now more than I did at the time as my dome shines through quite a bit these days.

Treehouse of Horror
“You know what would have been more scary than nothing? Anything!” I still drop that quote to this day. It’s the first, it’s the original, and you’ve gotta see it.

Dancin’ Homer
This is a classic – “Just squeeze the weez!” Love it.

Dead Putting Society
The Simpsons goes all inspirational sports story on us.

Bart the Daredevil
What little kid never jumped over something on his bike? And I love the Wile E. Coyote styled ending!

Itchy & Scatchy & Marge
“I guess one person can make a difference, but most of the time, they probably shouldn’t.” Genius!

One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish
“My skilled hands are BUSY!” I will never forget that line!

The Way We Was
I love these flash back episodes, and this was the first.

Principal Charming
“I told ya ye’d be back!” Patty almost gets married; they should have followed this story line up. “Tomorrow is another school day!” I guess there’s still time.

Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

“You can never find a horn when you’re mad!” It’s so true.

Bart’s Dog Gets an F
“Blah blah blah sit!” I love this episode, but it’s hard for me to watch dog stuff sometimes because I’m a wimp.

Lisa’s Substitute
An unforgettable episode; maybe their first real tear jerker.

Three Men and a Comic Book
As a comic book fan, this episode really hit me where I live – love it.

I should mention that the finale dining room scene from “Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish” is a memorable moment from this season, but not an episode I especially remember with fondness. Oh, and there’s “Bart gets hit by a Car,” another ‘Mr. Burns is victimizing us’ episode that I don’t necessarily love – also, “Blood Feud” is more of the same. “Bart vs. Thanksgiving” feels like an episode of many other shows I’ve seen countless times before – I feel the same way about “Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment.” “Old Money” doesn’t do much for me… “Brush with Greatness” has some moments I like, but it’s not an episode I love… I guess it’s the first appearance by the (at the time) three remaining Beatles. “The War of the Simpsons,” again, feels like an episode from a network’s pile of standard plots.
